When renowned violinist Holger Brandt (Leslie Howard) first hears his daughter's piano teacher (Ingrid Bergman) play, he is immediately smitten with her talent and beauty. When they fall in love, he leaves his family so they can be together. But it is not long before Brandt comes to realise how much he misses his wife and daughter and agonises over the misery he has caused them.
